A typeface for Europe’s largest independent agency network. A typeface for the House of Communication. A typeface for a glowing carpet of light. A typeface for wayfinding. A typeface for Serviceplan: service. Together with büro uebele, a playful geometric grotesque was developed – a finely tuned system of eight ultra-light styles, each delicately graded to match the specific needs of the project.
Process
The basic grid and character of the typeface were initially developed by büro uebele. The underlying system uses a square-based grid, balancing straight lines and circular forms within a uniform framework. Some letterforms proved too sharp or angular, leading to the development of alternative versions with more geometric structures.
Building on this geometric foundation, the full character set was expanded to include accents and special symbols for common Latin-based languages. Designer Shiwen Sven Wang contributed custom pictograms, carefully adapted to match the typeface’s stroke weight and visual rhythm.
The stroke weights were another key challenge: for the intricate light installation, extremely fine gradations were required. Through detailed testing in five-unit increments, seven final weights were defined – each precisely tuned to balance clarity and delicacy across the different media.
