For the German architecture studio stollarchitekten, a custom type system was developed in collaboration with büro uebele. The expressive headline style draws inspiration from the handwriting of the firm’s three partners, while the geometric body text styles offer a neutral counterbalance. In the display weights, both worlds merge in lowercase only – characterful and clear.

The body text styles – Regular, Italic, and Bold – come without alternates and are designed for clear, reliable communication in editorial use. Their restrained forms allow the expressive headline cut to shine, while ensuring consistency and legibility throughout the system.

Process

All alternate letterforms were initially drawn by Filip Antunović from büro uebele. While the early designs featured a monolinear stroke, the headline letters were later refined with subtle horizontal–vertical contrast to enhance visual comfort. In addition to adjusting the spacing and adding kerning, the stroke modulation was fine-tuned across the entire set.

A key part of the process was developing a neutral companion for continuous text. Initial experiments involved modifying existing geometric typefaces such as Gain or Krasz, adapting them in weight and proportion. Eventually, a new geometric design was drawn from scratch – one that supports the headline letters by offering a neutral counterbalance.
