nice to type is an independent type foundry based in Fukuoka, Japan. Founded by Gabriel Richter in 2017, the foundry creates and publishes carefully crafted typefaces for text and display. Beyond design quality and technical care, nice to type values fairness and accessible education: there are no subscription models, and students can use our fonts free of charge.
Gabriel Richter studied communication design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences from 2010 till 2015. During this time, he became interest in typedesign right away during a workshop of Jakob Runge and Max Kostopoulos. After working on experimental typeprojects, Richter absolved an internship at FontShop International in 2013, where he developed a more detailed knowledge in typedesign, as well as all the things behind a typeface: Font production, hinting and font marketing. After his Bachelor project, in which he developed the grotesque Richter Grotesk (now called ’FF Infra‘, published at FontFont), he worked as freelancer in graphic design, and typedesign till he ultimately created nice to type (formerly übertype) in 2017. Since 2016 Richter teaches typedesign at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.

Klaus Richter, born in 1953, studied at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences under Helfried Hagenberg and Kurt Wolf from 1971 to 1975. The main focus of his studies was type design. The topic of the final thesis was the conception, design and implementation of an alphabet that was especially suitable for the black-and-white television of the time. An offshoot of the final project was the typeface Television. Richter went on to develop other experimental typefaces such as Laser, a stroke and dot system, and Cut, a typeface without ascenders and descenders. In 1978, he founded a design agency. For well-known national and international companies, he developed integrated corporate designs and created large-format annual calendars, posters and logos. In 1986, Richter also founded an advertising agency ‘schalten & walten’ that focused on the design of catalogs, advertising campaigns and the creative realization of annual reports from a wide variety of industries. From 2015 Klaus Richter concentrated mainly on photography and art. Today, the focus is mainly on metal music.
